Four games that need no installer
for the long nights on the ridge

A fire season is mostly waiting, and the nights on a tower are longer than anything else about the job. These four free-to-play games fill them honestly: not one asks for an installer, a launcher or a patch, so you open a tab, register, and you are playing within a minute. Between them you get a space empire where the politics matter more than the fleets, a civilisation to walk through the ages, a hospital to keep running, and a garage full of tank parts.

01 · Space empire strategy

Hyperiums Reborn

A redesign of a strategy veteran that has been running since 2001, and it shows in the best way: planets to grow, a standing argument between economy and defence, and rounds that last months, which gives the diplomacy time to turn into something worth following.

Good for
Players who come for the politics as much as the fleets.
Typical session

Free to play; optional in-game purchases.
Your first session
  1. Read the alliance channel for a few days before committing to anybody.
  2. Balance defence against economy early; pure growth is an invitation.
  3. Pick a round that has just started rather than one halfway through.

Heroes of History key art
02 · Empire and heroes

Heroes of History

An empire walked forward through the ages, with named heroes recruited to lead its armies and battles fought on a tactical grid rather than resolved by arithmetic. It gives the city-building half a fighting half that is actually played.

Good for
Builders who want the fighting to be a game in its own right.
Typical session
Half an hour at an age change

Free to play; optional in-game purchases.
Your first session
  1. Push the research line steadily; ages gate everything else.
  2. Keep one hero squad properly levelled rather than four half-levelled ones.
  3. Lay the city out with room to spare, because later buildings are larger.

Kapi Hospital key art
03 · Hospital tycoon

Kapi Hospital

Patients arrive, you treat them, and the money pays for staff, equipment and another ward. Research opens new treatments as the caseload grows. It is the gentlest management game on this shelf and the only one you could call cheerful.

Good for
Players who want management without a spreadsheet.
Typical session
Fifteen minutes a day

Your first session
  1. Hire before you buy equipment; idle machines cost more than they earn.
  2. Treat the cheap cases first while the wards are small.
  3. Keep one ward unfinished as room to grow into.

Tanki Online key art
04 · Tank combat MMO

Tanki Online

A browser tank MMO where you assemble a machine by pairing interchangeable hulls and turrets in a garage, then upgrade them with battle earnings. Rank tiers gate the better gear across deathmatch and capture modes.

Good for
Players who want a garage to tinker with between fights.
Typical session
Twenty minutes

Free to play; optional in-game purchases.
Your first session
  1. Upgrade one hull and turret pairing rather than spreading earnings thin.
  2. Play capture modes for steadier earnings than deathmatch gives.
  3. Learn two maps properly before worrying about the rest.

What no download actually means

Nothing is installed. All four run inside the browser already on the machine, which is why a borrowed laptop or a locked-down work computer is usually no obstacle at all.

Each studio keeps a shop inside its own game, selling premium currency, ornaments and timer skips. None of it is needed to play properly. Where a computer is shared with children, set the spending controls on the studio account before handing it over.

The first quarter of an hour

Follow the link under any game and the studio’s own site opens in a fresh tab. Register there, usually with an email address and a password, and the world loads a moment later.

Give the opening tutorial your attention on that first visit. The three slower games introduce resources, research and other players in a deliberate order, and skipping ahead means relearning it clumsily a week later.

Fitting one around a working day

Three of these keep their own time. Planets grow, research finishes and patients arrive whether the tab is open or not, which makes two short visits a day a perfectly respectable way to play.

Save the real decisions — an alliance switch, an age change, a new ward — for an evening when you are not watching the clock.

Looking after four separate logins

Every account belongs to its own studio and never to us, so type the password only on that studio’s own pages. Give each game its own password and switch on any second sign-in step offered.

No real member of a support team will ever ask for a password in a game chat, a forum reply or an email. Anyone promising free premium currency for a login is after the account itself.

Why these four stay in the bookmarks bar

  • Not one of them has an installer or a launcher. The browser already on the machine is the whole requirement.
  • Registering is free everywhere; the shops inside sell shortcuts and ornament, never entry.
  • Three of them keep running with the tab shut, so a five-minute look still moves something along.
  • Each has been going for years under a studio that still updates it, and there are people online at most hours.

None at all. All four open in an ordinary desktop browser and start the moment you have registered, with no launcher and no patching to sit through.

No. Registering and playing are free in every case, and each shop holds optional extras rather than anything that gates the game itself.

They are not. Four separate studios build and run them, and our buttons simply open each official site so you can register there.

No. Each studio handles its own sign-up, so expect four registrations and four passwords.

Heroes of History and Tanki Online each publish a phone app besides the browser build. Hyperiums and Kapi Hospital name no app at all and would rather you brought a keyboard.

Kapi Hospital, for the gentlest start by a distance. Tanki Online if you would rather be shooting within a minute.

In three of them, a great deal: planets grow, research finishes and patients keep arriving. The tank MMO is the exception, and nothing there happens without you.
